Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developer Archer Aviation has announced it has significantly expanded its partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) by signing new contracts with the U.S. Air Force with a total value of up to $142 million.

Strengthening the Collaboration

The recent contracts mark a significant milestone in the partnership between Archer and the DoD. Under this new phase of collaboration, Archer will deliver up to six of its cutting-edge Midnight aircraft to the U.S. Air Force.

Additionally, the sharing of valuable flight test data, certification related test reports, pilot training, and the establishment of maintenance and repair operations will further reinforce the capabilities of the U.S. military.

The alliance between Archer and the DoD dates back to 2021, where they began collaborating through the U.S. Air Force’s AFWERX program. The primary objective was to assess the transformational potential of the vertical flight market and eVTOL technologies for DoD purposes.

With Archer’s recent achievement of manufacturing its first Midnight aircraft, the DoD recognizes the tremendous advantages these eVTOLs bring to the table.

These aircraft possess exceptional features, such as vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, a target payload of approximately 1,000 pounds, a proprietary electric powertrain system, and a low noise profile. These attributes represent a potential paradigm shift in military aviation and operations.

Advancing eVTOL Mission Profiles

Archer’s Midnight aircraft open up new possibilities for the U.S. military across various mission profiles. From personnel transport and logistics support to rescue operations and more, these innovative aircraft promise to enhance rapid response, agility, and operational effectiveness.

One of the most significant advantages of Archer’s Midnight aircraft is their safety and cost-effectiveness. They offer a much safer and quieter alternative to traditional helicopters, making them ideal for sensitive military operations.

Furthermore, their design ensures they are more affordable to transport, operate, and maintain in the field, delivering substantial cost savings to the U.S. military.

Leadership Comments

Adam Goldstein, the founder and CEO of Archer Aviation, expressed his excitement about the historic agreement and the commitment of the U.S. Armed Forces to embrace cutting-edge technology.

He looks forward to working closely with the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force to integrate Midnight aircraft into their operational fleet, with a focus on transport, logistics, and rescue operations.

Colonel Tom Meagher, the lead for AFWERX Agility Prime programs, stated that eVTOL aircraft represent the cusp of the third revolution in aerospace. He believes these aircraft will drive advances in capabilities and efficiency.

The collaboration with Archer Aviation provides the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Air Force a unique opportunity to lead in developing and deploying emerging aerospace technology.

Retired 4-Star General and Archer Government Services Advisory Board member, Steve Townsend, expressed his enthusiasm for the agreement and its potential impact on the capabilities of the U.S. Armed Forces. As a nation at the forefront of technological innovation, this partnership showcases the United States’ commitment to maintain its position.

Government Services Advisory Board

In May, Archer Aviation announced the establishment of its Government Services Advisory Board. The primary goal of this advisory board is to facilitate closer engagement with U.S. government and public safety agencies.
