VIETNAM – A number of air traffic incidents recorded in the first half of 2023 has seen the Vietnamese Minister of Transport issue a letter to aviation organisations urging the strengthening of security measures.

The recent letter issued by Minister of Transport Nguyễn Văn Thắng emphasizes the need for strengthened safety measures in light of a series of air traffic incidents in Việt Nam.

The Ministry of Transport has mandated that all airports report any issues promptly, before the deadline of July 15.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Việt Nam (CAAV), there were a total of 41 air traffic incidents, including one accident, in the first half of this year.

Although this represents an 18% decrease compared to the same period last year, the recent occurrence of a serious air traffic incident on June 24 highlights the urgent need for increased attention to aviation safety.

Recent Minimum Separation Infringement

The most recent incident in question was a violation of the minimum distance during the take-off period at the Nội Bài International Airport.

Such incidents not only pose risks to the passengers and crew on board but also have a detrimental impact on the overall safety of flight operations.

Furthermore, instances of foreign object damage (FOD) at airports including incidents such as aircraft tires being cut by foreign objects have also come to light; raising concerns of potential damage to airplanes.

CAAV Urged to Act

Recognizing the severity of these incidents and the direct threat they pose to flight operations; the Ministry of Transport has mandated that the national aviation regulator, Civil Aviation Authority of Việt Nam (CAAV) takes immediate action.

The CAAV is required to conduct thorough investigations, determine the causes behind the incidents, and classify them in accordance with established regulations.

Based on their findings, the CAAV will then provide safety recommendations to relevant units and ensure strict enforcement of penalties for organizations and individuals found in violation.

In addition, the CAAV has been tasked with enhancing supervision over agencies and service providers at airports.

This includes the monitoring of runways to promptly detect and address any foreign objects that could potentially jeopardize flight safety.

Summary

A series of 41 reported air traffic incidents including one accident in the first six months of 2023 has been the catalyst for the call to tighten aviation security and reporting procedures.

By taking these proactive steps, the Ministry of Transport aims to significantly improve the safety index of aviation in Việt Nam.

The swift actions, investigations, and strict measures will help prevent future incidents and ensure the well-being of passengers, crew members, and the overall integrity of flight operations.

It is essential that all stakeholders work together to prioritize aviation safety, making it a top concern in the industry.
