US carrier American Airlines has developed an analysis tool to optimize traffic flow during severe weather events. Airline operations are carefully planned and orchestrated, but when severe weather strikes, it can quickly disrupt schedules and leave customers stranded.

American Airlines has developed a cutting-edge tool called the Hub Efficiency Analytics Tool (HEAT) to help keep customers moving during these challenging times.

American Airlines HEAT Data Analysis

HEAT uses data about weather, flight schedules, customer connections, and gate availability to dynamically shift arrivals and departures around at American’s larger hubs. This helps to avoid the most severe weather impacts and keep the airline’s operation running as smoothly as possible.

“HEAT is an innovative tool that will only get smarter with use,” said Timothy Niznik, American’s director of IOC Analytics.

“Each time we run HEAT, we analyze the results and incorporate those findings so we can continue to improve the strategies and technology that help keep our operation moving.”

Since its initial deployment last year, HEAT has prevented nearly 1,000 flight cancellations across American’s network.

Flight Scheduling Optimization

“HEAT allows me to optimize our flight timing in inclement weather to provide a better experience for our customers and crews — it’s a game changer,” said Bob Shirley, an American dispatcher, air traffic control coordinator, and member of the team who developed the tool.

HEAT is just one example of how American Airlines is using cutting-edge technology to improve the customer experience. The airline is also investing in new aircraft, airport facilities, and customer service initiatives to make flying with American even better.

Here are some of the benefits of HEAT:

  • Prevents flight cancellations
  • Improves customer experience
  • Keeps the airline’s operation running smoothly
  • Gets customers on their way faster during severe weather

HEAT is a valuable tool that helps American Airlines keep its customers moving during severe weather. The tool is constantly being improved, and it is already having a positive impact on the airline’s operations.
